In Memory Of Our Classmates

A 12 x 12 memory wall tile in memory of our classmates and in honor of our 30th class reunion has been ordered. Many of our classmates have sent additional funds which has helped purchase this memorial in time for the September dedication. It will read: "In memory of our classmates that have passed before us "SHS CLASS OF 1979 "In honor of our 30th Class Reunion".

Click on the links below for more information.

We purchased a brick for the Cheyenne County Community Center commemorating our 10 year reunion. The brick simply reads "Class of 1979". The brick resides on the inside entry way of the Community Center.

In the past, we have also used donations and registration money to send cards, flowers and memorials to families of classmates that have passed. We have also used the money to publish ads in the paper to "find" missing classmates, to post an "In Memory Of Our Classmates" ad for our 20th reunion, to hire entertainment, to rent buildings, to purchase food and drinks, etc.

This year, we were fortunate to have a few of our classmates give anonymous donations, above and beyond the registration, to allow our registration fee to be at an all time low plus purchase the memory tile. Our hats off to you...you know who you are!

Keep 'em coming!

Here's what Robyn Custer has been doing!

My parents moved to Denver while I was still a senior. I followed after graduation. When I turned 18 I followed a guy to North Platte for a year or two where I worked as a diesel fuel pump jock for 2 years! Hey...you do what ya gotta do. I moved back to Denver for a year or two and moved to Dallas in '83. While there I met my ex-husband, got married, started college at the age of 26, finished in 3 1/2yrs graduating Summa Cum Laude from UT Arlington with a BBA. Who'd a' thunk it given the whole truck stop thing? JTook the CPA exam my last semester in school and passed, went to work for Grant Thornton. My husband and I split shortly before I graduated and after about a year I moved to Colorado Springs wanting to be closer to family. I lived there for more than 10 years (LOVED IT) and just moved to the Denver area in the fall of '02. I did do a short 2 year stint in Silicon Valley from 2006-2008. Money was great but I was homesick and just moved back in May 2008. I am currently working part time and going through a career change that I am still sorting out what I want it to look like but I will venture a guess it won’t entail auditing or crunching numbers for anyone but myself. : ) Living the life of a rolling stone but never made the cover.

Best to all in Sidney.

In Their Own Words....

Thanks for keeping us informed on the class reunion details. Unfortunately, our kids (Theo 15, Sam & Maggie 14 and Jake 9) go back to school on August 24th, so Labor Day weekend just isn't a good time for us to get away. I know we'll be missing a fun weekend but please tell everyone hi from us & hopefully we'll be able to catch the next reunion.

Virgil & Debi Meier

I am not going to be able to attend. =-) I have a schedule conflict. I really wish I could. I haven’t been to one yet. I hope you all have a great time.

Robyn Custer

Wish you both could be with us. Check back for photos after the BIG event.

Denny Wamsley is coming!

Just received Denny's registration in the mail. Come on Classmates! Follow suit! The clock is ticking! September will be here before you know it! We need a head count for Saturday nite supper.

If anyone would like a copy of the Excel worksheet that the committee put together of addresses and emails of fellow classmates, either email me or place a comment in the comment section at the end of this post with your request.

Still waiting for more emails for "What have you been doing the past 30 years". And where are those photos?

Here is what Rich Patten has been doing!

Went to college in Lincoln, played way too hard, but managed to get in 5 seasons of the Huskers.

Graduated and moved to the armpit of Kansas, Wichita, with Black and Decker.

Six months later I married Vicki Moore, met in college, dated 2 ½ years.

We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in May of this year in a special way.

Nothing says I love you like a hysterectomy.

Six months later, moved to Kansas City. Became a Royal’s fan.

Lived in Overland Park, KS for 2 years.

Moved to Denver with Mutual of Omaha. Worked with Niner and Marlin Jung.

Stayed there 4 years, moved to Chicago fall of 1990.

Walker, my son was born in Hoffman Estates, IL, December of 1992.

Moved back to Kansas City, stayed another 5 years.

My daughter, Madison was born March of 1997.

Moved back to Denver to again work at Mutual of Omaha.

Have been here since, helping run our sales office. Live in Parker.

For enjoyment, we used to ski, but now both kids play ice hockey, and all we do is go to practice or games.

Ski occasionally. I actually play old man hockey, amazed I sweat because if you ever watch a game, you realize I don’t move.

I play golf every weekend, live in a great neighborhood and can think of no place I’d rather live.

Looking forward to seeing old friends Labor Day weekend.

Not sure if I am very fond of the way Rich used the word "old". LOL!

Here is what Chris Wiedeburg has been doing!

Hello classmates of 1979! I’ll try to be brief with regards to ‘what’s been happening’ for the past 30 years, but as you know, it’s a really long time!

Immediately after high school I attended, Nebraska Western College in Scottsbluff. Anxious to get into the working world (silly me) I completed a 2 year AAS degree in secretarial sciences in 18 months, and then started with the Educational Service District #14 in a secretarial role. This transformed into a data processing role, and was really a great job. However, in 1983, I traveled to Spokane, Washington to attend my cousin’s wedding, and simply fell in love with the area. With an invitation from my aunt & uncle to stay with them while getting on my feet, I returned to Sidney, quit my job, and moved to Spokane, which is where I still reside.

I started working for Hewlett-Packard in January of 1984. HP ‘split’ into 2 companies (HP and Agilent Technologies) in 2000, and our site became part of Agilent, which is where I still work. I held a variety of IT roles for 23 years, until restructuring and off shoring put me in a position of having an ‘exit date’ to leave the company. Fortunately, before my date came, I was able to acquire the position of Executive Assistant to the General Manager of our local division. I have certainly been very fortunate to be with such a great company for so many years. Taking advantage of HP/Agilent’s educational assistance, I tool several college courses over the years. However, it wasn’t until 2005 that I finally got serious, and entered an adult accelerated program and earned my Bachelor’s Degree from Gonzaga University in Organizational Leadership in 2007.

As for my family life… in 1985 I joined a dating service (yes, there were dating services back in the dark ages) but they relied on photo albums, not the internet to show photos of potential dates! It was there I met my wonderful husband Steve and we married a year later. Steve now runs our window covering business here in Spokane. We built a new home a couple of years ago and continue to enjoy it every day.

We have 2 wonderful daughters. Hannah is 20, and commutes to Eastern Washington University just outside of Spokane. Hailey is 18 and just graduated from high school, and will attend Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma in the fall. Both took advantage of WA State’s running start program and earned their AA degrees by the time they graduated from high school. Each and every phase of raising them has been a joy and we consider each of them an absolute blessing. While enjoying dinner out on our anniversary recently, Steve and I agreed that raising the girls has definitely been one of the best things we’ve done in our marriage!

When not working we enjoy walks with our newly adopted dog, Fergie, time with family and friends, and an occasional ride on Steve’s Harley.

I will not be able to make it back to the reunion, as we will be taking Hailey to college. I hope those of you who can attend have a great time catching up with each other, and reminiscing about old times.

Take care,

Chris

Here is what Lori Bahr has been doing!

I started my full time working career immediately after graduating high school. I worked at Dinklage Feed Yard as a book keeper for a couple years before working at Memorial Hospital as a billing clerk. I worked at the hospital for ten years. I left the hospital in 1990 and took the position with the City of Sidney as a billing clerk/computer operator. I later advanced and am now an account clerk-my main duties are accounts payable, relief payroll clerk and customer service. I also construct the city's websites.

I married Steve Bruns in 1981. We have a wonderful daughter, Stephanie Laurel. We divorced several years later.

In 1997, I married Mike Borchert. Mike brought to this marriage three daughters, Christina, Chrissy and Lindsey.

We are fortunate to have a very loving blended family. Our daughters are all married to fine young men. We have five grandchildren. Mikella, 2 (Christina & Tom-Casper WY), Aaliyah, 2 (Chrissy & Simon-Surprise AZ), Karsyn, 7 (Lindsey & Brandon-Sidney NE) and Kameron, 6 & Laurel, 9 months (Stephanie & Nick-Dover DE). We just had the pleasure of having our grandson, Kameron spend a couple weeks with us this July. Quite the experience after having an empty nest for....... hmmmmm, let's just say, quite a few years.

The highlite of my life is my family. Our children and grandchildren. I am so proud of each of them. They all are employed, five of our children (and spouses) were/are in the military. Our daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Tom both served in Iraq. Tom is on his second tour and is currently in Kuwait.

My favorite hobby is taking photographs. Especially of my grandchildren. I also enjoy golfing, walking, reading, scrapbooking and graphic design.

I never left Sidney. And I have no regrets. I love the small town life, knowing pretty much everybody.

Well that pretty much sums up the last 30 years. I hope we hear from more classmates as well.

One More Registration!!!

Another addition to our reunion!

Tony Skrdlandt has registered. Hey Tony...where's your photo?

Here is what Cyndi Avey has been doing!!

After graduation I attended the Grand Island School of Business in Grand Island, NE and received a degree in marketing 1980. In 1985, I took a writing class from the New York Newspaper Institute in New York City.

With my writing I have one book published, & many poems published, along with awards won. I will sit down to the computer at times, and write stories for people when asked. I have a work in progress right now.

In the 90's, I attended Central Community College in Grand Island where I took day care, & early childhood classes. I also sold Mary Kay Cosmetics for 20 yrs. I now have a home business selling Shaklee Nutrition since 2001. After working at the day care, & being sick all the time, from the kids, I got real tired of being sick, so now, I take Shaklee, & I'm healthy. Right now I work at Duckwalls/Alco in Ravenna. My marketing degree comes in handy working there.

I married Larry Bock Sept 12, 1981 in Ravenna, NE. We have two amazing children. My children are my whole life. I feel, that I was very lucky to be able to raise my children, to stay at home with them, until Leigh Ann was in the 6th grade. I then went to work at the day care in Ravenna, NE.

Leigh Ann is my daughter. She took dance, cheerleading, & gymnastics in Grand Island for 15 yrs. We had many trips to Grand Island, sometimes 3 times a week. Leigh Ann also was very lucky enough to participate in dance classes & workshops in Kansas City with the LA Underground, & Tremaine. One of her dance teachers in Kansas City danced in the movie, "Dirty Dancing". Leigh Ann attended & graduated from UNK in 2005, & this past May she just graduated from Concordia University with her Master's Degree in Reading. Leigh Ann is the Special Education teacher and Education Consultant at Seedling Mile, in Grand Island, NE. She has had many successes in teaching her special needs children. Children that were told they could never learn, Leigh Ann has taught. We are so proud!! Leigh Ann married Tim Miller in Kearney, NE, June 06. Tim has a son, Colton, & they also have two puppies. Tim is a Yard Forman at CXT, LB Foster, where they make concrete railroad ties, and for Tim’s hobby he’s a race care driver.

Wayne is my son. He has taken us on many paths thru our life. He loves his sports. Wayne was a 3-sport letter winner. Wayne participated in football, basketball, & track in high school. He played legion baseball, & golf’s for fun. In high school Wayne worked at the Ravenna swimming pool, where he life guarded. During his senior year in high school he broke the Ravenna High School High Jump Record. We felt very lucky as a family during Wayne's senior year in high school. We got to attend state basketball, & track. Wayne had a WOW senior year!!!Wayne played basketball @ Central Community College in Columbus, NE and graduated there in 2006. Wayne transferred to Doane College in Crete, NE. Where he will graduate this coming May. He will also be a teacher/coach. This summer Wayne traveled all over NE, putting on two-a-day basketball camps.

Wayne played basketball at Doane, now he is coaching Doane basketball, & he also jumps for the Doane Track team. I will miss attending his basketball games, & track meets. This is his last year. We have been going to his games since he was five years old. That's alot of years of going to games. We have been very proud of everything that he has accomplished thru his sports.

Larry is a farmer/rancher. People have asked me, “Why does your husband farm?” I would say, that he has a very important job, he & all the other farmers, are feeding the world. If there's no famers, then theres no food. Larry also loves to hunt & fish. Larry graduated from Ravenna High School in 1975.

I have enjoyed attending all of Leigh Ann's dance recital's, her Kansas City dance workshops, & attending all the pep rallies, ball games that she cheered & danced at. Time goes by so fast, it is hard to believe, where the time went.

It has been fun attending all of Wayne's games in all the different schools/college's; the many road trips that we have taken and all the campuses that we have been on, has been wonderful. I love to travel with my family & friends. I also enjoy walking, reading, scrap booking, & spending time with my family & friends.

Here is what Lori Lodes has been doing!

A quick synopsis of my life after high school - graduated from UNMC with a degree in Medical Technology worked one year in Omaha NE and met my husband of 23 years - Jerry. Moved to Alaska - lived an adventure filled life up there for the next 7 years and then moved back to Northeast NE where Jerry took over the family farm. Worked in the medical industry for 15 years then decided to move on so I got my MS degree in Computer Science - had a son - Evan - who is now 13 - started working as the technical director for a (dot) com startup was then asked to teach some adjunct courses at Wayne State College and decided I liked it so now I'm starting my 9th year at WSC as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science. Working on getting my PhD in CS so I can continue in education and will hopefully be finished this fall!! Missing a lot of filler but I'll save that for our next reunion :)!

I won't be able to make it to the reunion this year due to the fact that I hope to be defending my dissertation over labor day weekend in Florida. It was the only time that would work so I was disappointed to hear it fell on the same weekend as our 30th year reunion.

Lori-We will miss you the reunion but wish you the best on your dissertation.
